(Conversation)

You will hear a brother and sister talking on the phone about arrangements for their father’s 80th birthday party. First, you have some time to look at Questions 1 to 3. You will see that there is an example that has been done for you.

Margaret: Margaret here. I’m just calling about the arrangements for Dad’s 80th birthday party.

Rob: Right.

Margaret: I’ve rung around the rest of the family. Most people do intend to come, even though it’s a long journey. Have you made any progress with the venue?

Rob: Yes. There are three possible hotels we could use for the party: the Royal, the Star, and the Winchester.

Margaret: Oh, good. If we can make a decision now, you can probably book straight away on the internet, can’t you?

Rob: Well, only the Star. I’d have to make a telephone booking at the others, but that’d be okay too.

Margaret: Okay. So which one do you think is better?

Rob: I’m not sure. They’re all fairly suitable, and they’re in really nice locations. The Star looks right out over the bay; it’s on a clifftop. Then the Winchester is in lovely countryside too.

Margaret: Yes. It’s in the valley, isn’t it?

Rob: Yes.

Margaret: What about Mum’s wheelchair? How easy would it be for her to get in and out of these places?

Rob: Well, I know that the Winchester would be fine, and the Star because I’ve been there with her before. I wasn’t sure about the Royal because I seemed to remember it had a lot of steps, so I checked, and apparently it’s had ramps installed recently, so there wouldn’t be any problem there either.

Margaret: Oh. And what about the kids? Which one do you think would be most suitable for them? Have they got play areas or anything?

Rob: The Royal haven’t got anything, but the Winchester has one. It’s on the ground floor, they said, not far from the dining room. The Star’s got one too, but it isn’t under cover, and we don’t know what the weather will be like, do we?

Task: Which hotel offers the following facilities? Write the correct letter, A, B, C or D next to questions 1–3.

Example: online booking …… B ……

  1. sea view …………..
  2. disabled access …………..
  3. indoor play area …………..

A. Royal Hotel; B. Star Hotel; C. Winchester Hotel; D. All three hotels.

(Key Content)

(Answering Tips)

  • 預測同義改寫:作答前先圈出題目關鍵字,例如 “sea view” 、 “disabled access” 、 “indoor play area”,並預測可能出現的相關說法,例如 “look out over the bay = sea view” 、 “ramps = disabled access” 、 “under cover = indoor”

(Monologue)

(Modern Art Gallery Floor Plan)

Welcome to the Modern Art Gallery. It is my pleasure to introduce you to the various sections of the gallery. The gallery consists of two levels. As you can see from the map, we are in the large atrium on Level 1 at the meeting point.

First of all, I’ll tell you about the exhibits on this level. In this room, which is our meeting point, you will find an exhibition of our very own heroes: Tolden photographs, paintings, and memorabilia. This is a great starting point if you want to find out more about the people who have played an important role in our city.

Between the ticket booth and lifts, you’ll find the entrance to the other major display on this level. All the works featured here are by modern artists who have won awards in the last few years. Recent winners such as Martali and Kashiwagi are on display, and I suggest you take advantage of it while it’s here.

If you like sculpture, then please visit our section called Latin America in the far corner. There’s an excellent collection of two of Colombia’s finest. Sculptures by Morales and Alvarez are really not to be missed.

One of my favorite areas on the first level is for our younger visitors. The resident art teacher is here throughout the school holidays to help your children create a piece of art in the Learning Zone. You’ll find it between the Latin American exhibition and the café.

Task: Label the map below. Write the correct letter, A–C, next to questions 1–3.

  1. Recent Award Winners
  2. Local Heroes
  3. Learning Zone

(Key Content)

(Answering Tips)

  • 辨識方位詞與同義改寫:留意 “our very own heroes” 、 “people who have played an important role in our city” 對應 Local Heroes ; “won awards in the last few years” 、 “Recent winners” 對應 Recent Award Winners ; “between…and…”

(Conversation)

(Riverside City Museum Visitor Briefing)

I’d now like to explain several procedures that help us maintain a safe and enjoyable environment for everyone.

If you discover a suspicious package or an unattended bag, please do not investigate it yourself. Instead, use one of the emergency phones located throughout the museum, and inform security immediately.

Occasionally, visitors accidentally drop items behind display cases. If this happens, please do not attempt to retrieve the object yourself. Some exhibits contain sensitive equipment, and staff members will safely recover your belongings later.

In the unlikely event that you hear a fire alarm, remain calm and move to the nearest exit. Staff members will direct you to the assembly area outside the building.

You may occasionally notice damaged signs or broken exhibit labels. If so, please report the problem at the information desk, so that maintenance staff can address it promptly.

Finally, because the museum contains several floors and exhibition wings, some visitors become disoriented. If you find yourself lost, simply follow the floor signs located throughout the building. These signs will guide you back to the main hall or any major attraction.

Task: What action should visitors take in each of the following situations? Choose the correct letter, A–H, next to Questions 1–5.

Actions:

  1. Move to the nearest exit.
  2. Report it at the information desk.
  3. Wait for museum staff.
  4. Leave the area quietly.
  5. Use the emergency phone.
  6. Do not touch it.
  7. Follow the floor signs.
  8. Fill in the tourist survey questionnaire.

Situations:

  1. discovering a suspicious package __________
  2. dropping an item behind a display case __________
  3. hearing a fire alarm __________
  4. noticing a broken exhibit label __________
  5. becoming lost inside the museum __________

(Key Content)

(Answering Tips)

(Academic Lecture)

(Surveys and Reform in Hospital)

I’ll begin with one section of feedback from my questionnaire. As I said, I asked two hundred local people several questions about the hospital and its services. Amongst other questions, I asked which things would influence their choice of which hospital they would want to be treated in.

The results were quite surprising in some cases. For instance, people felt that easy access to transportation was more important than how far the hospital was from their homes. But this might be reflective of the advanced age of many of the people who took part in my survey.

How modern and safe the hospital building was something that some people were concerned about, but this wasn’t quoted often enough to make it significant. How clean it was, however, certainly was. One in two people surveyed listed this as a major concern.

People also said it was important for them to know that a member of the hospital staff would be prepared to give them information they needed about their treatment before they had it too.

Task: Complete the notes below. Write NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER for each answer.

Major factors for people to consider when they choose a hospital

  • First: easy access to 1. ______________________
  • Second: Some people consider the building should be modern, while more people agree that the hospital building should be 2. ______________________
  • Hospitals should provide 3. ______________________ to patients prior to treatment.

(Key Content)

(Answering Tips)

(Passage 1)

(The Origins of Tennis)

Aside from these two Arabic words, there is no other evidence for any form of tennis prior to the year 1000. Most historians believe the origins of the game date back to 11th- and 12th-century France. It’s thought that French monks were the first to play a basic game of handball against their monastery buildings, or over a rope strung across a courtyard. Those who dispute more ancient origins argue that the name ‘tennis’ is derived from the French tenez, which meant something to the effect of ‘take this,’ said as one player would serve to the other.

This game took on the name jeu de paume, which means “game of the hand or palm.” But as they found playing with bare hands quite uncomfortable, players began using a simple glove, and later either a glove with webbing between the fingers or a solid paddle, similar to the ones used in table tennis today. Wooden racquets were not invented until much later.

The French nobility learned the game from the monks, and some accounts report as many as 1,800 tennis courts in France by the 13th century. The game, which remained exclusive to the upper classes, gained more popularity over the 14th and 15th centuries. As it became increasingly fashionable, outdoor courtyards were modified into indoor courts. The game became such a widespread diversion among the aristocracy that both the pope and the French king tried to ban it. By the 16th century, the game had spread to England, where it became known as ‘tennis.’ Both kings Henry VII and Henry VIII were avid players who promoted the building of courts, and it also became a very fashionable game among the English upper classes.

Task: Match each development with the correct period, A–D. Write the correct letter, A–D, next to Questions 1–5. NB You may use any letter more than once.

Major factors for people to consider when they choose a hospital

Periods:

  1. 11th–12th centuries
  2. 13th century
  3. 14th–15th centuries
  4. 16th century

Situations:

  1. An early form of the game was probably first played by monks. ______
  2. France reportedly had a very large number of tennis courts. ______
  3. Outdoor playing areas began to be converted into indoor courts. ______
  4. The game became so popular among the aristocracy that attempts were made to prohibit it. ______
  5. The game reached England and was encouraged by members of the royal family. ______

(Key Ideas)

(Answering Tips)

  • 注意同義改寫:原文的 “tried to ban it” 對應題目的 “attempts were made to prohibit it” ,作答時不要只搜尋原文完全相同的字詞,應留意這類換句話說的表達方式。

(Passage 2)

(Growing More for Less)

  1. Examining the wavelength of radiation that is reflected can reveal, with surprising precision, the properties of the soil, the quality of crop being grown, and the levels in those crops of chlorophyll, various minerals, moisture and other indicators of their quality. If recent and forecast weather data is added, detailed maps can be produced indicating exactly how, where and when crops should be grown. The service usually costs less than US $15 per hectare for a handful of readings a year, and can increase yields by as much as 10%.
  2. Such precision farming using satellite-based intelligence is a relatively new technique. Even so, it is catching on quickly. Five years ago, for example, a French cereal-growers’ co-operative called Sevepi purchased a satellite and makes it available to its members in the form of maps of their fields, divided into three or four color-coded zones per hectare. For each zone, the exact and best fertilizer formula is recommended. On top of this, if the amount of rain in the field has already grown quite high early in the season, and heavy showers are expected, an appropriate dose of growth regulator is recommended for each zone (as fragile stems break more easily in downpours). Then, farm vehicles equipped with global-positioning system locators automatically mix and apply the prescribed dose to each area.
  3. France is the pioneer in this sort of surveillance. More farmland is analyzed by satellite there than in any other country, according to Infoterra (a subsidiary of EADS Astrium), the firm that is France’s largest provider of such information, supplying data to companies such as Sevepi. Moreover, Henri Douche, head of Infoterra’s agriculture sales in Toulouse, reckons the amount of monitored farmland will increase as weather patterns change and farmers can no longer rely on the past as a guide to the future. When confounded by the yield variations that these new weather patterns will bring, even farmers who are afraid of new technology will sign up, he says.

Task: Reading Passage has three paragraphs, B–D.
Which paragraph contains the following information?

Write the correct letter, B–D, in boxes 1–4 on your answer sheet.
NB You may use any letter more than once

  1. A reference to climate change and its effects. __________
  2. Mention of the country which is the leader in agricultural technology. __________
  3. An example of how farmers in one country are now using satellite data to determine fertilizer use. __________
  4. Evidence of the cost-effectiveness of using satellite technology in agriculture. __________

(Key Ideas)

(Exam Tips)

(Passage 3)

(The Dunedin Study)

The New Zealand city of Dunedin in the early 1970s can easily be made to sound idyllic. There was next to no unemployment and people left their doors unlocked at night. New Zealand was then the ninth richest country in the world and many residents believed that, as a place to bring up children, this was a city without rival. However, Phil Silva, an educational psychologist, was not so certain and decided to take a closer look. Silva identified those children born in the year from April 1, 1972, whose mothers were still living in the city three years later. The parents were asked if they would mind bringing their children in for a health and development assessment. Incredibly, no fewer than 91% agreed to help and 1,037 three-year-olds completed half a day of tests and experiments. In the process, the Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health and Development Study was born.

There was precious little money at Silva’s disposal, so the assessments were done in a church with the help of dozens of volunteers. Each child was assessed against a range of measures such as height, weight, and head circumference. Language skills were assessed and profiles of behavior were compiled. However, one set of assessments was never going to satisfy Silva’s curiosity, so when the children were five, his same team asked the parents to bring the children back for a second study. Of the original 1,037 children, 96% came. The data gathered at age three was updated and new measurement criteria — discipline, nutrition, dental health — were introduced.

Task: What does the writer say about Dunedin in the 1970s?

  1. It was the safest city in the country.
  2. It was less prosperous than other cities.
  3. Many people were frustrated that they could not find a job.
  4. It was wealthy and seen as an ideal place to raise children.

(Key Ideas)

(Exam Tips)

(Who you ate it with)
(Why it was special to you)

(Discussion)

(Special Meals and Eating Habits)

Let’s consider first of all the topic of special meals and eating habits.

  1. On what occasions do people usually have special meals in your country?
  2. Why do people celebrate important events with special food or meals?

Finally, let’s talk about the role of family and education in eating habits.

  1. Should parents teach their children about healthy eating?
  2. What can parents do to encourage their children to eat healthily?

(Answering Tips)
