(Monologue)

(Farm Facilities Map)

So you might be interested in our worm farms. This is where we make fertilizer. To get there from the main entrance head north, you’ll pass gardens on either side of the path. Just before the path curves round to the right, there’s a turning on the left. Go down there and the worm farms are inside the first building you come to.

It’s also worth visiting our seed store. Again, head north and follow the path as it curves round to the right through the gardens. You’ll come to the orchard. Follow the path around the edge of the orchard, but don’t go too far. The seed store is actually located inside the orchard.

Now the machinery shed might interest some of you. From the main entrance, just go into the car park and walk right to the end. You’ll see a little path heading out to the west.

Our compost heaps are also pretty impressive, so head north from the main entrance, go past the first gardens and take the first turning on the left. Go to the end of that path. The compost heaps are built in the shape of a letter U.

The drying room is also interesting. Walk up through the gardens till you come to the orchard. Keep heading north, and the drying room is right at the very end of that path.

Task: Label the map below. Write the correct letter, A–H, next to Questions 1–5.

  1. worm farms ………………..
  2. seed store ………………..
  3. machinery shed ………………..
  4. compost heaps ………………..
  5. drying room ………………..

Part 3 | 對話 (Conversation)

(Video Games in Therapy)

Alya: Well, Jason, shall we do some planning for our joint presentation?

Jason: Yeah, let’s compare the reading we’ve been doing. Did you read that article by Dr. Franklin?

Alya: Yes, the use of games in therapy.

Jason: So, we’ll need to explain what kind of therapy he’s talking about.

Alya: OK, so it’s treating people after accidents or illnesses, rebuilding their body strength.

Jason: Exactly, and Dr. Franklin sees huge potential for games.

Alya: But he made the point that this isn’t new. Really, since the 1990s, therapists have been experimenting with games.

Jason: Yeah, I agree. Dr. Franklin illustrated that this has been going on for many years. It’s not a sudden breakthrough.

Alya: I was hoping he’d give some idea about how many health professionals now employ games in therapy.

Jason: He doesn’t really address that, does he?

Task: Choose the correct letter, A, B, or C.

Question: According to Alya and Jason, Dr Franklin showed that video games

  1. have been used in therapy for a long time.
  2. have only a limited number of uses in therapy.
  3. have been accepted by most doctors working in therapy.

(Key Content)

(Academic Lecture)

(The Klondike Gold Rush of Canada)

Today, I’m going to talk about an incredible event in the history of Canada: the Klondike Gold Rush. Between 1896 and 1899, over 100,000 people set out to seek a new life in the Yukon area. Only 4,000 people were actually successful.

Let’s start by considering the journey people had to take in order to reach the Klondike River and start looking for gold. For most gold seekers, their journey began in Alaska, in a town on the coast called Skagway. From Skagway, one option was to take the White Pass Trail through the mountains. It probably looked easy enough at the beginning of the trail, but rocks made it difficult to make progress. On top of this, the men and their horses got stuck in the thick mud that covered long sections of the trail.

The other option was the Chilkoot Trail. Now, although this trail was only about 35 miles long, it took about three months for the gold seekers to cover this distance. This is because the trail was incredibly steep and people had to make the same trip multiple times in order to transport their equipment. Most people really had very little idea about how difficult the journey was going to be. So although 100,000 may have set out on those two trails, only about 30,000 got to the end.

So yes, the majority gave up. Often they were suffering from starvation or disease. They also came to the terrible realization that their journey was likely to end in failure, and so they turned around.

Task: Complete the notes below. Write ONE WORD ONLY for each answer.

The Klondike Gold Rush of Canada
The gold-seekers’ journey to the Klondike river

  • Many gold-seekers set off from Skagway in Alaska.
  • The White Pass Trail was difficult because of rocks and 1. __________________ along the way.
  • The Chilkoot Trail was very 2. __________________ so it could take three months.
  • On both trails, gold-seekers gave up because of starvation, disease and the fear of 3. __________________.

(Key Content)

(Answering Tips)

  • 預測詞性再聽音:第 1 題「rocks and ___」須接名詞,對應答案「mud」;第 2 題「was very ___」須接形容詞,對應「steep」;第 3 題「fear of ___」須接名詞,對應「failure」。

(Passage 1)

(Reef Fish Study)

Reef Fish Study

Most coral reef fish have a life cycle consisting of an open ocean larval phase followed by a juvenile to adult phase near the reef. The transition between the two stages is marked by rapid and dramatic changes in the body of the fish, and a sudden move from the open ocean to coral reef habitats. This point is commonly known as ‘settlement’. Not surprisingly, it is also characterised by increased levels of mortality in the first 48 hours following settlement, as individuals are forced to adapt to life not only on the reef but also with a previously unknown set of predators.

However, studying the interactions between predators and prey during this phase is no easy task. On the northern Great Barrier Reef, coral reef fish settlement usually occurs within 2–3 days of a new moon during the warmer summer months. These short windows of opportunity, combined with the difficulties associated with working underwater, transporting fish and adapting them to the laboratory, often make research a daunting task. These obstacles are overcome using a combination of innovative techniques, long working hours and a measure of sheer persistence. We collect the larval fish immediately prior to settlement using purpose-built traps that use artificial light to attract and contain fish of this life stage only. These fish are subsequently transported to an aquarium, along with predatory fish, before being used in a series of aquarium and field-based trials.

Task: Complete the summary below. Choose NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS from the passage for each answer. Write your answers in boxes 1-3 on your answer sheet.

Life cycle of fish in the Lizard Island study

Phase 1: Larval stage
takes place in the 1. ______

Phase 2: Juvenile stage
takes place close to the 2. ______
the move from one habitat to another is called settlement
3. ______ rates are high in the early part of this stage.

Phase 3: Adult stage
takes place on or around the reef

(Key Ideas)

(Answering Tips)

(Passage 2)

(The Purpose of Facial Expressions)

Many took Ekman’s work to imply that facial expressions precisely indicated people’s feelings. However, this theory has been attacked by a number of psychologists, such as Alan Fridlund of the University of California, who claim that there is no one-to-one correspondence between facial expressions and emotions. Expressions evolved to set off certain behaviors in other people, says Fridlund. So a smile may prompt people to approach, a scowl may warn them to stay away, and a look of sadness may elicit words of sympathy and reassurance. In other words, in Fridlund’s view, facial expressions are inherently social – they involve not one, but two or more people. Even when people are alone they are holding a dialog with another person internally, or imagining themselves in a social situation.

Thus Fridlund thinks of facial expressions as tools for influencing social interactions, a view which, he claims, enables us to begin predicting when certain facial expressions will occur. This in turn will allow more precise theories about social interactions. His studies find that expressions occur most often during pivotal points, the turning points in social interactions – during greetings, social crises, or times of appeasement, for example. At these pivotal points there is an approach, or closeness, or more intimacy, and facial expressions, as well as gestures, open up the possibilities of various social interactions.

Task: Complete the sentences below. Choose ONE WORD ONLY from the passage for each answer.

  1. In Fridlund’s view ______ on someone’s face may be intended as an invitation to come nearer.
  2. According to Fridlund, when we are by ourselves we still use facial expressions because we are having a ______ with someone in our minds.
  3. Fridlund considers facial expressions to be ______ that can affect our contact with other people.

(Key Ideas)

(Exam Tips)

(Passage 3)

(Cargill Dow LLC’s New Material Technology)

In stark contrast to traditional non-degradable petroleum-derived materials, corn fibre polymer composites possess unparalleled sustainable superiorities. Primarily, the raw materials are renewable grain crops, effectively mitigating industrial reliance on finite fossil fuel reserves. Furthermore, during the natural degradation cycle, these novel materials facilitate carbon sequestration by absorbing ambient atmospheric carbon dioxide, delivering tangible ecological benefits. In terms of practical performance, modified corn fibre textiles feature superior air permeability, efficient sweat absorption properties and exceptional colour fastness, effectively resisting fading after prolonged service and repeated cleaning.

Despite its comprehensive environmental and functional advantages, the large-scale industrial promotion of this bio-based material is constrained by inherent technical and economic bottlenecks. The fermentation and condensation synthesis procedures demand high-precision automated equipment and stringent environmental control, resulting in substantial production expenditure. Additionally, corn raw material yields are subject to seasonal fluctuations and geographical planting limitations, restricting stable mass production. Currently, the company’s R&D team is optimising process parameters to curtail operational costs and upscale industrial output efficiency.

Task: Choose the correct letter, A, B, C, or D.

Question: What is the core advantage of Cargill Dow’s new material?

  1. Low manufacturing difficulty
  2. Unlimited raw material supply
  3. Environmental friendliness and sustainability
  4. Mature large-scale production

(Key Ideas)

(Exam Tips)

Writing

(Academic Writing Task 1)

(Different Transport Methods in China)

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task

The graph below shows the differences of methods in China to transport good between 2001 and 2015.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Atlas 2606

Write at least 150 words.

(Writing Strategy)

  • 善用趨勢詞彙:可運用如 “experienced a steady upward trend”、”surpassed”、”peaked at”、”witnessed a slight drop”、”remained the dominant mode of transport”、”rose significantly compared to” 等表達方式描述變化。

(Writing Task 2)

(Road Safety Laws)

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.
Write about the following topic:

People these days prefer to watch films and TV programmes alone rather than with other people.

Why is that? Do you think it is a positive or negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

(Writing Strategy)

Speaking

Part 1 | 暖身題 (Introduction & Interview)

(Gifts in Childhood)

  1. What gifts did you receive as a child?
  2. Which one impressed you the most?
  3. Do children nowadays receive too many gifts?
