(Geology)
Geology is the scientific study of our planet, including its composition, structure, and processes. Geolo_ _ _ _ _ analyze ro_ _ , minerals, a _ the nat_ _ _ _ forces th_ _ change t_ _ outer lay_ _ _ of Ea_ _ _ over ti_ . This know _ _ _ _ helps scientists understand the planet’s history and predict future changes. It is essential for natural resource management, hazard mitigation, and environmental protection. Advances in geologic research—such as satellite-based remote sensing, deep-Earth imaging, and isotopic dating—have greatly improved our ability to monitor earthquakes, track volcanic activity, and assess groundwater resources.
- Geologists,
- rocks,
- and,
- natural,
- that,
- the,
- layers,
- Earth,
- time,
- knowledge.
在 “rocks, minerals, and the natural forces” 中, “and” 用來連接並列名詞,而 “natural” 則作為形容詞修飾 forces。
-
另外,“that change the outer layers of Earth over time” 中,也可以透過句型及上下文依序判斷 that、the、layers、Earth、time。

TrailCharge 10K Power Bank
I bought this before a three-day field trip. It charged my phone twice and still had enough power for my wireless earbuds. The battery indicator is accurate, and the attached cable means I do not have to pack an extra one. However, it is heavier than the product page suggests, so I would not carry it for a short commute. For overnight travel, though, the reliability is worth the extra weight.
Task: According to the reviewer, what is one advantage of the TrailCharge power bank?
- It is lighter than advertised.
- Its attached cable reduces what users need to pack.
- It charges a laptop several times.
- Its price is lower than competing products.
文章明確指出: “the attached cable means I do not have to pack an extra one” ,也就是因為產品本身附有充電線,使用者可以少帶一條線;因此第 2 個選項為正確答案。

Why Some Cities Cool More Slowly at Night
Urban areas commonly remain warmer than surrounding countryside after sunset, a pattern known as the urban heat island effect. [A] During the day, dark roofs and paved surfaces absorb large amounts of solar energy. [B] After sunset, these materials release stored heat more slowly than soil and vegetation do. [C] Tall buildings can also reduce air circulation and limit the amount of heat that escapes toward the open sky. [D]
Nighttime warmth varies considerably within the same city. Districts with dense construction and little vegetation often cool slowly, whereas large parks may create pockets of cooler air. However, a small park surrounded by tall buildings may have less influence than its size suggests. Researchers therefore combine satellite measurements with street-level air sensors rather than relying on surface temperatures alone.
The effect matters because the human body depends on cooler nights to recover from daytime heat. When temperatures remain high, the risk of heat-related illness increases, especially for older adults and people without air-conditioning. Higher nighttime temperatures also increase electricity demand because buildings must be cooled for longer periods.
Cities use several strategies to reduce stored heat, including reflective roofs, shade trees, and lighter-colored pavement. No single measure works equally well everywhere: trees require water and maintenance, while reflective materials may be less effective on streets shaded by buildings. Effective planning therefore depends on local climate, building form, and neighborhood needs.
Task: The letters [A], [B], [C], and [D] in the passage indicate where the following sentence could be added.
“This delayed release is one reason temperature differences often become most noticeable at night.“
Where would the sentence best fit?
- Choice [A]
- Choice [B]
- Choice [C]
- Choice [D]
而在 [C] 前方的句子正好提到: “these materials release stored heat more slowly…”
Listen and Choose a Response
Task: Should we ditch our original research topic?
→ (C) Sure, we can think of something better.Task: I wonder if the campus bookstore carries new releases.
→ (C) They have my favorite author’s latest novel.Task: Could I pick your brain about the stats problem?
→ (B) Sure, let’s schedule a time to meet.
“Should we ditch our original research topic?”
是在詢問是否應該放棄原本的研究題目,因此 “Sure, we can think of something better.”
“I wonder if the campus bookstore carries new releases.”
因此 “Sure, let’s schedule a time to meet.”
Listen to a Conversation
Man: Hey Megan, did you check out that new boutique on Andre Avenue yet
Woman: I did yesterday, actually. It was packed, but their summer collection is stunning. Floral prints, linen skirts, even some vintage hats.
Man: Sounds like a fashion treasure hunt. Did you end up getting anything?
Woman: After trying on five dresses and debating with the sales lady about sizes, I finally settled on a lightweight blue one. It was the last one in stock.
Man: Lucky find! Hope it wasn’t too pricey.
Woman: Let’s just say my bank account is greatly reduced—still, my friends are going to be jealous.Task: What is suggested about the dress the woman chose?
- It has many colors.
- It will be a gift for a friend.
- It was expensive.
- It was the wrong size.
Listen to an Announcement
Narrator: Listen to an announcement before a university event.
Professor: Good evening, everyone. In preparation for tonight’s gala, I’d like to go over some important instructions. When you arrive, please check in at the registration desk to receive your name badge and program booklet. Dinner will be served at 7:00 p.m. and will be followed by a series of speeches and a musical performance. Scan the QR code in your booklet for more information on any of the participants. Special thanks to the Student Government for its financial backing of this event.
Task: Why do attendees need to check in at the registration desk?
- To pick up a name tag and a pamphlet
- To reserve a slot to make a speech
- To place a dinner order
- To make a donation
Listen to an Academic Talk
Woman: Listen to a talk in a physics class.
Woman: We’ve been talking about the law of inertia. An object moving in a straight line will continue to move in a straight line unless it is acted upon by another force. So what does this mean in the real world? Let’s look at something many people do all the time, riding a bicycle. Think about riding along in a straight line. Once the bike is moving, inertia will keep it going in a straight line.
But we don’t just ride in straight lines, do we? We turn at corners and steer around things that are in our way. So how do you get the bicycle not to go straight? Easy, right? Don’t you just need to turn the front wheel in the direction you want to turn? In fact, if you only turn the front wheel, you’re likely to end up on the pavement. The wheel will turn, but because of inertia, your body and the rest of the bike will want to keep moving straight ahead.
So how does a cyclist avoid this? The key is to lean in. Weight needs to shift in the direction of the turn so that the force of gravity can work against the force of inertia. Professional cyclists who move at high speeds need to hit a sweet spot. They must lean more to keep their bicycles from sliding out of turns, but not too much. At a certain point, gravity will bring both rider and bicycle down to the ground.
Task: What is the purpose of the talk?
- To show how easy it is to conduct a physics experiment
- To describe the discovery of a law of physics
- To explain two physical forces acting on a moving bicycle
- To offer reasons why many physicists like bicycle riding
Build a Sentence
I’m going to the new student art exhibition this weekend.
______ you ______ ______ ______ ______ advance?
tickets, to buy, do, need, in
Do you need to buy tickets in advance?”

Write for an Academic Discussion
Your professor is teaching a class on sociology. Write a post responding to the professor’s question. Express and support your opinion, and make a contribution to the discussion in your own words. An effective response will contain at least 100 words.
- Dr. Diaz: Permanent public art installations are more valuable for creating lasting community identity and pride. Colorful murals and interesting sculptures transform boring public spaces into inspiring environments where people enjoy spending time daily, which supports local businesses. Unlike temporary events, permanent art provides year-round cultural enrichment and gives residents constant opportunities to feel connected to their neighborhood’s artistic character and history.
- Kelly: Permanent public art installations are more valuable for creating lasting community identity and pride.
- Andrew: I think communities benefit more from funding temporary cultural events like outdoor concerts, theater performances, and art festivals. These events bring people together for shared experiences, support local artists through paid performances, and attract visitors who spend money at nearby businesses. Temporary events also allow communities to experience diverse art forms and adapt their cultural programming based on changing interests.
I agree with Kelly that permanent art fosters neighborhood identity, and I would add that iconic installations can also become long-term landmarks that boost local tourism.

Listen and Repeat
- You can rent climbing shoes at the front desk.
- Always wear a helmet when in the gym.
- The shorter walls can be used without ropes or a harness.
- Just follow the colored marks to stay on the same climbing path.
- Also make sure to check out our special strength training zone.
- Use the hang and chin-up bars to increase the power of your upper body.
- If you need help, trained instructors are always nearby to guide and advise you.
可以先聽較短的語塊,例如「在櫃檯」、「不使用繩索或安全帶」以及「受過專業訓練的教練隨時都在附近」;像 “climbing shoes” 、 “helmet” 、 “shorter walls” 、 “colored marks” 、 “strength training zone” 、 “instructors” 這類實詞通常會唸重音,而 “can” 、 “at” 、 “the” 、 “in” 、 “to” 、 “or” 等功能詞通常讀得較弱。
另外也建議要留意單字之間的連音,例如 “wear a” 、 “check out” 、 “guide and advise” 。
Take an Interview
- What is one aspect of history that you find particularly interesting?
- Describe a history-related activity or project you enjoyed, and what made it engaging?
- If you were to visit a historical site you’ve never visited before, which one would you choose and why?
- Do you think the study of history remains important in today’s educational system? Why or why not?
